I watch my niece every other weekend or so and I get paid 20$. Well recently my SIL said money has been tight and she wants to know if she can buy me 20$ in food instead with her FS. I usually spend the money on snacks for her dd and the kids anyway.

I'm kinda up in the air about it. On one hand I want to; It will help her out and I will be feeding her dd with it but on the other hand I don't want to commit fraud either...

No. Its illegal food stamp fraud. Both of you could be in trouble for that. Ppl like that make all people who get fs look bad imho. Tell her to use the money to buy snacks and food for her kids.....does she do this with others? I am thinking I know the answer if you're having to buy snacks. If you really want to help either offer to sit for free or let her pay you when she has the cash, but be mindful you might not get pd. If you keep records/filing exchange services babysitting for help filing or pulling weeds in the garden or housework. see if there is a service she can do then swap services. But again don't expect reciprocation, as this is family but don't tell her that obviously. If she reciprocates great if not oh well.

You would be surprised.........

Quoting dmb.wells:

OMFG the state does NOT have time to investigate $20 worth of freaking food stamps!  There are far more pressing matters on their plate. WTH would they spend their time investigating a loss that's less than an hour of their salary?  I swear, some of you on here trying to scare her and talking about fraud and getting caught - I think you just like to "hear" yourself type.

A person on FS can buy food and feed other kids.  That's not fraud.  They can even buy food and GIVE it away (gasp, clutch the pearls!)   The state is not some secret agent KGB organization that's going to follow you around and bug your phone and install spy cams on your neighbor's house to make sure you aren't giving away a box of crackers to your babysitter because you were short on cash!

OP, you are FINE.  TAKE the $20 in food and enjoy.  Nobody is tracing your IP over some damn $20 in FS.

A school birthday party is a once a year event, with nothing in return.....that's the difference. Here she is getting a service in return. She might be able to try qualify for daycare while working or looking for work. Sil OP could apply for license from state and they would pay her directly......something to look into.

Quoting paganbaby:

What about supplying snacks for a class party, or throwing a birthday party? Would it be illegal to use FS then?

Quoting Thelmama:

She shouldn't as that is fraud.  I worked as a food stamp worker many moons ago. She shouldn't do that, money tight or not.

I remember that one we had a similar case in FL too.

Quoting acrogodess:

Look up the case in Washington state where the woman was living with her doctor husband in a multimillion dollar home by the pacific ocean and claiming he was her landlord. She got over a $1 million in benefits from the state before being caught!

Quoting paganbaby:

Good Lord! That's terrible :-/

Quoting acrogodess:

Depending on the state, they would consider it a waste of a phone call to their fraud department. While they would answer the call, it would likely never make it into their database to conduct an investigation. They would never be able to prove that you didn't already have the food in your pantry or that she purchased it for your home. Investigations cost money and if they're going to spend money on investigation, it will go into catching people living in homes purchased by their kids father who is pretending to charge them rent by pretending to be a roommate or landlord. :-/

Quoting paganbaby:

That makes sense. I mean it's not like she's going to be dropping off her card for me to use for the month.

Quoting acrogodess:

The food stamp office won't care simply because the food is being used to feed your niece. Yes, other people are eating it, but the same goes for anything you are fixing from your own money that your niece eats from. The only way the food stamps office would care is if the family members of the cardholder was not benefiting from the food stamp benefits.

She's actually right they don't even need an IP address they have your screen name linked to your email and in most states they ask for that on the application. Dcf investigator techies troll on sites like these looking for cases like this, to make an example out of someone.....esp with a past history of not catching fraud/abuse/neglect. Its not about $ its about politics......

Quoting paganbaby:

She is, poor thing. Her husband is refusing to work things out with her. But he keeps playing mind games. The girls, 2 and 5 months, are picking up on her stress and acting out as well. Me taking her 2yo for the weekend is a HUGE help for her.

Quoting emsmom627:

lmao i know right.  i would not worry about it.  the food is for her daugher.  she is obviously having a tough time and she is family.  don't overthink it.

Quoting paganbaby:

I seriously doubt the CM team will track me down using my IP address and turn me into the authorities because I asked for opinions about my sil buying food for when her dd spends the night.

Quoting Derpy:

You know CM team do see every post made, all that has to be done is someone reports the boards,it will track your email which tracks the IP address straight to your computer.

Still think you cant get caught?

I believe that it is wrong. This is how people abuse the system. Food Stamps are there as aid to make sure you don't starve to death. They are not meant to trade for  tother services or to sell them to someone for money. If you are able to that, then you really didn't need the assistance that much.
