When ds was a baby, I made up a song to sing him to sleep at night.

*Sung to the tune of Jesus Loves Me*

Mommy loves you, this you know

For she often tells you so

You are little, she is strong

You are right where you belong

Yes mommy love you, yes mommy loves you

Yes mommy loves you, she often tells you so.

This came up in conversation with my Mil recently, and she was mortified! She said no song about our Lord should be parodied like that and I should never sing it again.

What are your thoughts?

I changed I lay me down to sleep to where is says

I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, angels watch me through the night until I wake in morning light.

There are two parts to every song - the lyrics and the music.  You can use the music for anything you want.  It is simply a series of tones put together to form a melody.  If you were the change the lyrics of Jesus Loves Me to sing "Jesus hates me", then your MIL would have a valid point.  But what you do with the music is sweet and loving, just like Jesus.  Go for It.

I am Christian and I think that's okay. It's just a melody. You weren't making fun of Jesus or anything.
