Trailer for Unfinished Documentary Asks Why Nicolas Cage Was Never Superman
Jon Schnepp wants to know why Superman Lives was never made into a movie, and frankly, so do I, because this film sounds freaking awesome. In the mid-90s, a bunch of the coolest people in Hollywood started the process to make a Superman movie, but it never got off the ground. For some reason, a superhero movie starring Nicolas Cage, directed by Tim Burton, and written by Kevin Smith didn't get made. I know.
Schnepp is here to figure out why the project never came about with his documentary The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? It's not finished yet, and to raise the funding he needs to complete his unfinished documentary about an unfinished movie, the producer/director has released a trailer in hopes of crowd-funding it to completion.
And really, how could this not happen? Apparently the film was going to play up the alien aspect of Superman's nature, since you know, he's actually an alien and all. Nicolas Cage playing an alien Superman in a film directed by Tim Burton. I know I keep repeating it, but dang. The only thing that could make it all better would be if you threw Steven Spielberg in as the producer.
Anyway, this documentary will talk about the truth behind what really kept this would-have-been-awesome movie from being made. Schnepp gathered several people who worked on the defunct project, including Smith and Burton, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, production designer Rick Heinrichs, screenwriter Wesley Strick, costume designer Colleen Atwood, special effects supervisor Steve Johnson, storyboard artist Tim Burgard and associate producer Derek Frey.
Take a look and get a behind-the-scenes look at the epic film that was never meant to be, and try not to weep that it never happened.
Are you sad this movie didn't get made?
