What do you think of an 8 year old cooking something for themselves on the stove???

As long as they know the basics of safetey and have been shown a few times how to do it... sure. Some kids are ready, others aren't. It really depends on the kid though.

I taught a number of my nieces how to at that age range. Just was sure to inforce "hair up in a tie/out of face/not danging over the stove", don't set pot holders/towels on a hot surface, etc.

I just never let them put stuff in or out of the oven. They could do all the prep work they wanted, but I'd handle the actual movement of food in reguards to the oven.

That's something I'd like to start doing with the skids. SD15 can cook by herself but won't clean up, Ss13 and Ss10 have no idea how to cook. Bm has no intention of teaching them and since Dh is CP I guess I'll start when they get back from summer visitation.
