My vacuum cleaner just died. No fixing it. The cord has a tear I disnt notice. Luckily I know how to reset fuses, or we would be sittin here in the dark. Any suggestions for a replacement???? The only rooms with carpet are the kiddos rooms upstairs. Everything else is laminate wood. So I dont need anything fancy!! I was using a bissle handheld that converted to a vacuum with a long handle and a bottom piece with a roller. Pretty simple and it worked great.

I'm ok with expensive as long as it works!!! Do they make a smaller portable version? The only carpet we have is upstairs! But I also use it on the floors downstairs cuz I'm lazy and it's easier than sweeping ;)

I have laminate floors in most of my house too, the Kirby changes to a canister vac where you just use the hose and the roller attachment.

I think they have some smaller versions...the one I have was about $400, but I've had it for years!  It has broken pieces on it, but the vacuum still does a great job!  It's so good that it has DH's seal of approval, in fact, he threw HIS bagless vacuum away after only about a year of use because he had to admit that the dyson worked better than his $80 hoover! :-)  Go on amazon and look up the dyson brand, they have a cordless one, but not sure how good that one is, I don't trust battery operated vacs too much.
