Beating is anything above and beyond a simple swat on the butt.

A SEVERE beating is one that results in the type of injuries described.

While I do think there is a difference between spanking and beating, I think that's a disturbing way to phrase it. 

I also think there's a difference between SLAPPING and beating, but both can be considered assault.
