Welcome!
I would like to welcome you to the CafeMom Ferrent Group! My name is Amanda, and I am a ferret rescue branch director, as well as mom to five little toe munchers. I am always looking for ways to learn more about these amazing little creatures and share the information I have picked up along the way.
I want this to be a place were we can come to tell stories, share pictures, and most importantly discuss the welfare of our beloved fuzzies. I would like this place to become a resource for all Cafemoms who are fuzzy owners to come to get information about being a better ferrent.
We can all help each other out here. Each of us has unique experiences and knowledge about ferrets. If you are reading this, then your heart has already been captured by these fuzzy creatures and you probably already know that they are unique as far as pets go. Ferrets need specialized care and have specialized illnesses and diseases that we as ferret owners must learn more about in order to prolong the lives of our beloved pets.
No arguing or flaming will be tolerated here. This is why I decided to form my own group. I want to control how things are done. The rules are simple. PLAY NICE. Everyone has different opinions about the best ways to take care of ferrets. Most of the time there is no "wrong way" it is all a matter of what works for you. Please have respect for the other members and they will do the same for you.
Most of all, HAVE FUN, post lots of pictures and tell lots of stories. I just LOVE hearing about fuzzies. :D

Amanda,
THANK YOU so much for inviting me to join this group!
It's been a very sad ferret year at my house. Between Feb and May of this year I lost 4 ferrets and currently only have two. I lost Toes in Feb. to insulinoma she had been on pred for a year and sadly she decided one day that she just wasn't going to take her meds anymore. She was also bald from adrenal gland tumors, inoperable because she was 8 years old when diagnosed.
Bandit, Toe's cage-mate died a week later, adrenal gland tumors that were a total surprise...no hair loss, no enlarged vulva. Just went down hill fast! Ultra sound showed adrenal gland tumors. She was also 8 years. I think she died from a broken heart after loosing Toes.
Tweek died in May. After loosing Bandit and Toes, everyone went to the vet for a check up. Tweek had been going regularly for what we (vet & I) thought was a dry skin condition, no hair loss. Finally, we were able to feel adrenal gland tumors and scheduled Tweek for surgery. Unfortunately, the news was bad. Vet called me during surgery, The right adrenal gland was the largest and because of location to vena cava she was afraid to proceed, afraid Tweek would not make it through surgery. Spleen also looked bad. So I asked her to just close. This was in the end of March, Tweek lived till the middle of May. We put him on monthly lupron injections. He looked awesome when he died had grown the hair back that had been shaved for surgery and was doing well. He died in his sleep.
Weasel, died one week after Tweek. Weasel was only 3 years old. She was a beautiful ferret..they were all beautiful. there was just something about her. Her coat was beautiful no hair loss. I found her in the bottom of her cage one morning. She was panting seemed in pain and when I took her out was limping. My ferrets have their own room in my house. They are in and out of cages on a rotating bases. I thought that maybe she had injured her leg climbing or maybe a spider bite? Went to the vet nothing was found did a weeks worth of pred....she seemed better. No more limping. To make a long story short we ended up at the emergency vet a week after I noticed her limping. They found an abdominal tumor. I brought her home for the night and took her to my regular vet the next morning. She was scheduled for a ultra sound that afternoon they did everything they could do to try and make her comfortable until we could get the ultra sound. She died before we could get that done. Necropsy showed a baseball sized adrenal gland which had ruptured she died instantly.
My daughter also lost a ferret during this same time period.
I am so heart broken! I can't even begin to tell you what it's like to have such loss. I hope no one has to go through this experience.
My two remaining ferrets Chewy sable, 4 years and Biscuit albino, 5 years are doing well. They've both had exams and bloodwork done in the past month. Chewy is the son of Audi my daughters female ferret who she bred twice.
Biscuit is a Marshal Farms ferret who I rescued 4 years ago.
Sorry this is so long. Sometimes you just need to vent. I promise happier posts in the future.
Dooks,
Janean

Hi, guys! Mt name is Lauren and I have 4 furry babies, and I 7 month old drooling baby. My ferts range in age from 6 years to 2 years. Lucy, a cinnamon sable, is the matriarch of our ferret family. I adopted her from a friend who was going to put her in the classifieds. She had adrenal surgery 2 years ago and is still doing well with occasional lupron shots. She was also recently diagnosed with insulinoma, but is doing well on .05 pred a day. Her cagemate is Buddha, a fatty silver mitt, and is argueably the sweetest tub of lard I've ever met. I adopted Buddha from Rocky's Ferret Shelter in Parkville, MD when he was 4 months old. My other two babies are fosters from the same ferret rescue. They had been at the rescue for over a year and a half. They had been there so long due to the fact that are a bonded pair, and they bite. Well, they used to. Ryan and Bojangles are my two 'savage' sable girls. They've really blossomed in a stable environment and rarely bite. It seems just to be in play, now.
The only problem I have with everybody is that my two bonded pairs don't play well together. Lucy and Bojangles both have a very dominant personality. Lucy is also notoriously hard to get along with. Buddha, and Lucy's late bonded mate Diesel, were the only ferrets to ever like her. I think maybe because she was an only ferret growing up, she doesn't know how to act around other ferrets. Especially ones that aren't very laid back. I don't put the pairs together because Lucy seems so frail, I feel bad when she gets beat up.
Anyway, I was really excited to see a ferret group here. It's nice to meet other moms with ferts.
