Our last car we had we paid it off within 15 months of getting it. We had it for 6 years and 10 months (to the day) and the engine blew so we had to get the truck we have now. We paid that off in cash the same day we got it.

We stopped purchasing cars on credit 3 years ago. We currently have 3 vehicles all in running order with no car payments. At one point in our lives we had over $1200/month in car payments. Of course now we know how absolutely ridiculous and irresponsible it was. Now we put $100/month into the new car fund and will continue to do so until we decide we need to sell and purchase another car. I don't see having to replace any of the three for at least 4 years, possibly longer.

Except for one time, we've saved up, bought used, and paid cash. We have only one car and make it work. It may not be the fanciest car each time, but it runs. You can negotiate when you have cash and avoid all that interest. For us that's a great thing. Having a loan over our head increased our auto insurance as well. So the loan experience was a real eye opener.
