Picture it: it's 5 a.m. this Friday. You will rise--maybe still in a tryptophan coma, tummy a bit bulging from the feast--and hit the mall. You will attempt to be one of the many to score some great deals and some awesome price cuts on what has been named Black Friday.
You'd have to be from Planet XRJU-55 not to have seen the ads and promos for the megasales in stores everywhere (and online that Monday after). However, before you buy a bunch of your holiday gifts during these sale days, stop and take a deep breath. Sure, you can save money, but you can also waste a lot of money.
How not to get swayed by the signs of deep discounts? We're here to help. We have all you need to know about Black Friday and your Family Piggy Bank. First up, shop smart this Black Friday by keeping these hints in mind.
-- Make sure your list is organized. If you are attempting to score some deals, sort that list by stores and then by categories of items (scarfs and winter essentials, electronics, toys) so you don't have to backtrack, which wastes time and sometimes money.
-- Know the store policies. Before you buy (and before all of the craziness of Friday), get the lowdown on returns and exchanges, restocking fees, and so on. Policies for Black Friday purchases may be different or last for longer or shorter amounts of time than regular purchases. Also, be sure you get a gift receipt for every item.
-- Keep thinking "From Me" and forget "For Me." This is not a time to be shopping for you. Stick to being Santa. No matter how great the sales may be, grabbing a sweater here or a scarf there can add up and dent that holiday budget.
-- Only shop those main Black Friday deals. If a lot of books or iPods are on your list, and they aren't on sale, skip them. Tackle those parts of your list another time (or online).
-- Log on and check for coupons. Sometimes stores will send you a coupon for even more discounts via email. Before you head out, log on and get the latest info on the sales.
Check back on Wednesday and Thursday for how to make sure those big purchases really are a good deal as well as tips for what to buy and what NOT to buy!
