School is out...or at least it is here in NYC. Many of our friends and Kiddo's classmates have already packed up and are heading off on vacation. Some are visiting family, some are hitting the beach, others are going to Europe. No matter where you are planning on visiting this summer, there are some fantastic things to do to save a little bit here and there - so the trip of a lifetime or even the trip to Grandma's house doesn't break the family piggy bank.
-- Ask a local. If you are going to a place you have never been before, ask a local - the baker in the corner store or the lady sitting next to you on the trolley -- for recommendations on where to eat or where to go (or not go) to get mementos. The folks that live there will point out great places that probably don't cost as much money as tourist traps.
-- Bring your own breakfast. Save money by not eating out every meal. Stock up on granola bars and mini cereal boxes.
-- Bring your own essentials. Buying sunscreen or shampoo or band-aids at the hotel shop is going to cost you maybe three times as much.
-- Find out how much insurance you already have. Fees for rental car insurance or travel insurance can be costly, but you want to be covered. Often, credit cards have that insurance as part of your agreement, so check with them before you head out. You can avoid paying extra for something you already have.
