I love staying at hotels. Having someone else make the bed every day, the little mints they leave at the pillow, the fresh sheets, the room service...this mama is drooling over a resort's duvet. But, that hotel stay can be shockingly expensive if you don't keep your eyes out for a good deal when booking or watch for hidden fees.
-- When you book, think beyond what the nightly rate says. Key in on deals that offer a free night or free services. When you prorate it out, that nightly rate is a pretty good offer.
-- If you know you will need internet access for the kids (or you) or other amenities, find out how much they cost when you check in...or better yet, before you book. Even though so much is done online, call the hotel and ask about essentials you may need.
-- When visiting a city you that you have never been, don't necessarily scrimp on the hotel and pick one farther away from where you will be doing most of your sightseeing. The time you will spend travelling to and from your hotel is valuable, as is the effort of dealing with trains or cabs. Spend the extra money to be where you need to be - it will turn out to be about the same amount of money if you remember your time and energy is worth money too.
What was your best hotel experience ever?

We also take the time to look at reviews online. There are plenty of great sites that provide a load of information from former guests.

I don't have a best experience so far we liked all of the hotels we have stayed at. I compare amenities and prices and always look at reviews online prior to booking our stay.
We usually just stay in motels.

i've only stayed at a hotel a few times, never had any wonderful or bad experinces. lol
That would have to be when we were headed back to TN from PA after my Grammy's memorial service and as we were about to head out of PA my DD got really sick and we had to take her to the ER and spent about 4 hours there so we drove halfway and the people at the motel were so nice and when they heard we had a sick baby they told us the next morning to take as long as we needed to, that's the day we woke up to 9/11 though, so it ended in sadness but the people at the hotel were super sweet.
We rarely are able to stay in hotels because they are so expensive so I don't really have a best on ever story of where we stayed. DH and I both worked when we were in college at a guest ranch/hotel though that was so nice. It was all inclusive in terms of the rooms, meals and activities and it was wonderful. I would highly recommend it to anybody looking for a western vacation. It is called North Fork Guest Ranch in Colorado.
I prefer bed and breakfasts, and we've been to some nice ones within a day drive.
