Do things like cutting lawns, car washes and babysitting to earn extra money? If they are not old enough will you allow them when they are older? Have the times changed your mind as far as saftey concerns?

No. They do extra chores at home. I would never allow them to go door to door. As for babysitting, I think later down the line I will do home child care for the summers and I will have them be my employees, like teenager summer camp counselors.

My son is 16, he does the lawn, takes the garbage out and helps with other chores in the house... we dont pay him for it, but he gets everything he needs and most of his wants.  My daughter will be 6 this upcoming month and I am teaching her to do her bed, fix her room and do the dishes. For us it is important for them to know that they need to help out and not expect any payment, because we are a family and its part of living in this household.

When they are older they will. We will expect them to do those things because it teaches them work ethic and allows them responsibility with their own money.

M oldest is 3, so not now. But they definitely will when they're older. It will start with feeding and watering our dog. The almost 2 yo is getting a kid size broom and dustpan for her birthday to practice now. Is that cruel? LOL

My 15 yr old DS is in his second year of cutting lawns, splitting and stacking wood, putting roofing on a house, and generally trying to keep up with my retired uncle and my 70 yr old dad.  He's getting paid and is able to keep minutes on his prepaid phone and he's paying for his driving school this summer.

My 13 yr old does yard work and will help my blind mom clean house.  He gets paid but he's not super motivated....yet.

As far as safety, the only thing we can do is teach them as best we can before we send them out to work small jobs.  I know that my 15 yr old is getting a GOOD education in safety from my uncle and my dad.  The men check with me before teaching him how to use potentially dangerous equipment, and I trust their judgement.  I know he'll be driving a skidsteer before the end of summer.
