Back to School Countdown Day 2: Budget for the Basics

What do you have to spend money on this school year? Ignore the ‘extras' (lessons, class trips) for a moment.

What money will you definitely be spending? Do your kids have uniforms or have to pay dues? Have you started saving for these expenses?

2 of my 6 kids have to wear uniforms.  My oldest son plays football, so I have to pay to go his games and for some of his equipment.

The joys of homeschooling!  There are no additional expenses here.

Gas, the preschool contracts with our public transit and they only pick up in town. They don't go house to house. I put on 80 miles a week for this. But there are no other expenses to ds attending.

We don't have kids in school so this isn't an issue yet but I'm huge into thrift shopping.

As my kids have gotten older their school needs have gotten more basic! So I don't really need to budget a whole lot for supplies. The one "supply" that may be a little spendy is a netbook for my 5th grader, the list says it is preferred, but since she already has her own laptop, I am going to try to dodge the bullet on that one. Other than that I do set aside about $150 each year for the additional things that the schools seem to nickel and dime you for-newspaper subscription, recorder, etc. There is always some paper coming home for something that will involve me paying for it!
