Back to School Countdown Day 3: Start Talking

Today's challenge is all about getting the conversation started with your kids. Do they realize how much things cost? Do they consider what things cost they ask for new shin pads or to go out with their friends after school?

Talk about how things add up and set a plan for the year. Let them know what to expect. What do your kids know about your family's finances?

My oldest will be 3 on the 25th. She knows what money is and that you have to have it to buy things. When she asks questions we explain things to her in a way that she understands. If she asks for something and we say "We don't have enough money for that" she understands and usually just leaves it at that. Thankfully! haha

My dd understands you work to make money. She understands how much things cost, she turns her nose up at things that are too expensive. :)

Kids know that asking for something doesn't mean they are getting it.  As fast as the modern gadgets go out of style, it seems silly to keep replacing them.

My kids are 5 and 3, I try to relate the cost of things to items they will recognize. I might say, you could by 2 more monster truck toys for the same amount as going out for pizza etc.  it seems to help a lot.

My big kids, ages 15 and 12 are saavy to our finances. Last year, we did the whole buget in frint of tgem. Since then they are good about not going overboard.

My little ones, ages 4 and 2 are too little to understand.

I talk to my kids about how we need to be responsible with our money and can't just buy things because we want them.  We talk about how daddy works to earn money for our family.  I also take them with me shopping and show them how coupons save us money.  My oldest gets a kick out of doing the math.

My oldest is only 5. So far she knows you need to save to get things and you need to work to earn money. She knows when daddy works overtime, it's because there is something we are saving up for!
