Back to School Countdown Day 3: Start Talking

Today's challenge is all about getting the conversation started with your kids. Do they realize how much things cost? Do they consider what things cost they ask for new shin pads or to go out with their friends after school?

Talk about how things add up and set a plan for the year. Let them know what to expect. What do your kids know about your family's finances?

I give my kids the list when we get to the store they have to add up the cost of everything so they see how much it is. With my oldest we have taken the reciepts from previous years and compared them so he sees how much more supplies cost every year

Same for our 4 year old daughter.  We have even started allowing her to do a few "extra" chores so that she can earn her own money.

Quoting Stevensmomma:

Ds is 4 so we explain things to him as much as we can he knows things aren't free and you have to pay for it with money and you have to work hard to earn money.

mine know a little bit about money and our finances. We are thinking about giving them an allowance but not sure yet.

Mine definitely know the value of money because they have to work for those extras.  A Saturday cleaning the house will get them tickets to the movies.  If they want something other than necessities, there is a job for that.  We started out small, like pick up your toys then we'll get that candy you want.  They are older now so washing the car, cleaning the house, mowing the lawn etc.

Ds is 5. He knows he gets to buy things he likes when he gets money for the holidays or his birthday or for helping around the house and being good all week. Dd is almost 4 months, so too young too know anything about finances.

I tell my DD  how many hours I have to work to pay for some things - the wants not the needs.  She's 11 and fully understands now.  When she was younger I'd tell her I don't have the money she's say "well just use the card" (my debit card) thinking money meant cash.

I talk to my dd about money. She knows how much I make and I even have a budget written out and posted on the wall.
