Sams Club

My dh joined Sams Club to save money. Now, we are "older", and our kids are grown. We do have a dog and 2 cats. Now I will admit that we do save money on gas, and possibly pet food, and prescriptions. However, I don't care to buy groceries there, because being just 2 people, we don't eat that much. I don't want to buy 3 huge bottles of ketchup, or salad dressing, or a huge container of fruit which will just go bad. Dh and I argue about this. He wants to buy huge amounts of things, and let half go in the trash. Personally, I'd rather shop in a regular store and buy sale items. So, can I have some input on this. I also think he buys crap that we don't need. We go through the store, he picks up things and I say "we don't need that" and he gets mad. What to do?

I agree with the paper thing. Guys like to see it "spelled" out like that. He can't argue with numbers - and neither can you. It's a sure fire way to keep emotion out of it.

Maybe sit down and talk about the pro's and con's.  Also putting things on paper and really show how much you are saving vs spending.

I have a costco card. yes its expensive to shop there. But its well worth it for us. I have all boys. Things last a lot longer. My mom has a sams club card. She takes me every now and then. I also have a freezer. That stays pretty stocked up. Thanks to costco.

This is exactly how we did it!! Costco was not worth it for us.

This is what we did with Costco before we quit.

Buy nonparishable items there and other items at the grocery store.

Sounds to me like you'd benefit by just buying:  Gas, pet food, your meds, paper towels, toilet paper, kleenex, maybe laundry soap?, anything you use all the time.  When I lived in a household of just 2 adults those are the items we bought.  You would go just once a month to get your stuff, and stay out of the other areas you or your hubby may be tempted to buy stuff you "don't need".

I am in a different situation now with a huge house which we go through paper towels and toilet paper, dish soap, and bathroom liquid soap like mad!  We have a rabbit whose cage gets cleaned daily or every other day.  I use paper towels for most of my house cleaning.  We have 3 1/2 bathrooms in our house so stocking toilet paper is a must.  We have a lot of family functions here including picnics, birthday parties, and holiday dinners, get togethers.  We have my step sons coming and going, but mostly just one now.  I cook dinners almost every night for us.   Now I really use the Sam's club for things we use all the time.  We feel it really saves us, but there are many things that are in too big bulk that we would never eat and would get thrown out.  So I shop just for the safe items to save money.

Leave your dh at home and shop without him. That's what I do he stays home with the kids and it saves me money.
