-Mom can I have Mac n Cheese?
I grabbed the box of elbow pasta and dumped it in my boiling water and all of the sudden I see little black insects floating in the water... eeewww!
Well needless to say I had to throw that away and look for another box, this time I opened it before putting it in the water and sure enough, it had them too :/
Now I have never seen these in my pasta before and I, as a frugal lady that I am, have been stacking up on boxes and boxes of pasta... so imagine my despair when I look at my collection. This morning I did my online research and found out what these little buggers were and how to get rid of them.
They are called weevil bugs, they are not harmful (yeah right, only to my pocket) and there is a natural way to get rid of them. They have nothing to do with you not being clean, they actually can get in your kitchen when you buy something that already have them. So my advice is to open stuff right away (specially if its pasta en boxes) and transfer your pasta to sealed containers. Other advice was to freeze the boxes... but I dont have an extra freezer.
So in order to clean you have to take everything out, even the cover on your cupboard (if you have them), then you can clean with soapy water and let it dry (i actually cleaned it with my vinegar mix, in hopes that this would be stronger), then when its clean and dry you can put dry Bay leaves all over... just leave them around, weevils don't like them.
So now my cupboard is clean... next to get rid of whatever had them. I have been collecting (yeah i do lots of this) glass jars and had enough to keep some of the things that were not infested. I put the stuff that they couldn't get into back in the cupboard and the new things in glass jars. Truth is my cupboard looks Martha Stuart-ish now and that's cool.. but the work and the waste was not cool.
So that was my Sunday morning activity :/ Have you ever gone through this? How you dealt with it?
