I know it might sound like cheating and it definitely wont taste the same as baking from scratch... but I have a questions about the box cake mixes.
I made an upside down pineapple cake with one of the vanila cake mixes that comes in the boxes. My family loved it and to me, it tasted just fine and took less time to make.
Have anyone ever used these mixes and re-done other deserts? For example I was thinking of getting pumpkin and integrating it into the cake mix... do you think it would work? Have you ever done something like this? if so, how did it go?
Thanks :)
thank you very much Clarisse.. yes it does help :)

Yes, all the time! It's easier. I never make a mix as the box says to / I always doctor it up, but I use the box mixes as my base.
Here's a general overview - introducing more liquid or a gooey substance (like pumpkin) requires the addition of a bit more flour and 1 additional egg for solidity. You wouldn't want to use these types for tiered cakes - they aren't sturdy enough. You can add dried, freeze dried, or dehydrated ingredients but will need to add just a tiny bit more of the liquid in the case of dehydratedor freeze dried, but not with nuts, sprinkles, or chips (or coconut). Does that help?
Thank you Rhonda.. didnt know that such a book existed :)) lol.. now i want it! will be checking my library.

I've done things like that! I tell you what: go find a copy of the Cake Mix Doctor cookbook, either at the library or thrift store, or a friend or even online. She's got PLENTY of recipes for very tasty cakes, and they all start with a cake mix.
wow never thought of that.. cookies yum! :))

You can also use cake mix to make cookies & crisps. One of my favorite fall recipes is an apple crisp made with yellow cake mix, it's soooooo good. That one is a Pampered Chef recipe (I don't sell, lol but I ate it at a party =)good stuff.
