What's an appropriate amount of allowance for a 9 year old?

Are you paying allowance just because or for chores?

I've heard from friends that pay a weekly allowance (just because), they pay $1 per year of age....so that would be $9.

My ds is 5 and in pre-k... he gets $5/weekly for good behavior, getting his homework done early & keeping this things (toys) neatly.  I am teaching him to save and showing him that everything in life costs money and that nothing is just given to us.

I have a 9 year old and we JUST started allowance this month :) Only because he has started asking to buy more and looking for ways to earn money so that he can keep his Pokemon Card habit going, haha. We set up a chore chart with 4-5 chores each day for him. For every week he completes 100% he earns $5, for a total of $20/month. I think $20 for a 9 year old is more than substational...they don't have to pay for gas in the car, dates, etc. He was so excited when he learned he could earn $20!! :)
