DIY Renovation Challenge Day 5: Things to Remember!

There is a lot of work that goes into a DIY renovation, but the reward is totally worth it! As you prepare for your next DIY project, there are a few things to remember!

  • Be careful about going too trendy! What's hot this year, may not be as "in style" a few years from now. Unless you plan on doing another makeover in a few years, go with a more traditional style. Save the hip and trendy items for accents that can easily be changed later on.
  • Set a timetable! Have a schedule of benchmarks you want to hit each day/week. You'll want to keep your project moving along so you don't get stuck in a never ending project.
  • Update what you have. If you are doing a kitchen renovation, consider painting or resurfacing your cabinets rather than replacing them. Sometimes a little change makes a huge difference without busting your budget!

We always learn a lot! Sometimes we learn it the hard way! ;)

We've never done any renovations before! I'm excited to get started, though. We're working to save up for the first leg of remodel.

Be realistic.  There will likely be some bumps in the progress of your project that will slow you down.  Plan for it, don't be frustrated.

Those are good tips.  We will be replacing our kitchen cabinets, or rather installing kitchen cabinets, because we really don't have any.  I love the timeline reminder.  We always pad the budget too.  I'm a fan of more traditional or neutral styles and am not interested in being trendy.

Always do a checklist before you start. Nothing worse than a half-finished project you have to leave to run to the store ;-)

Lists. Check them. Check them again :-P
