Back to School Fashion

School is back in session and I don't know who is happier, me or my son! Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE my son but I also crave the regimented schedule that school brings.  And do you know what else I love? SCHOOL SHOPPING! I have always enjoyed the summer ritual of shopping for clothes.

My Child is Different & I've Never Been Prouder

Posted by TruthfulMommy on Aug. 20, 2014 at 10:25 AM

Something happened at school this week that surprised me but not really. It was a definite proud mommy moment and I’m even prouder because my girls didn’t tell me about it someone else did.

Since my girls were tiny, I’ve taught them not to stare or make assumptions when they see someone who is different from themselves or disabled.  I’ve always encouraged them to ask me any questions that they might have and we’ve always discussed the situation. I’ve encouraged them to embrace differences in themselves and others. My main objective was to teach them that just because someone might look or act different than we do, we are all human beings on the inside and every human deserves to enjoy certain human rights, dignity and respect.

Getting Into The Back To School Routine

Posted by AngellaD on Aug. 19, 2014 at 12:00 AM

As I mentioned in my last post, my kids go back to school in September -- two weeks from today! While we're soaking up our last two weeks of summer, it's time to start getting ready for our school year routine. The school supplies have been puchased, sorted, and labeled. The main thing we have to do now is to get our sleep/wake cycles back to normal.

The Dry Run

Posted by TheFamilyPants on Aug. 18, 2014 at 12:00 AM

I can still remember the smell of my elemntary school. There was a distinct mixture of heavy duty powdered cleanser, concrete, gymnasium wax and dust.  It was the smell of my elementary school experience and it's universal, really. Or at least it seems to be the same in every elementary school in the Mid-West.  So when I took my son on tour of his new school and he mentioned that the smells were the same as his old school, I smiled. "Yep!" I said, as we walked the empty halls. "It smells just like when I used to go to school, too." He giggled. Smells are very powerful for him. His sensory processing is different than that of typical kiddos and odors are a big deal to him.  Just like so many of us, a familiar scent can help him cope. I was a bit relieved that he made the connection.

The Smelly Truth

Posted by ReneeJRoss on Aug. 15, 2014 at 12:00 AM

I am the proud mother of a seven year old and am clinging on for dear life to maintain his status as “my baby.” But my only child is quickly growing up and although he will always be a baby in my eyes, he is quickly become a young man. I remember being told that time flies and to cherish these years. I do. But as I watch him grow, the 365 days of each year seem to go by quicker and quicker.

A Few of Our Back to School Favorites!

Posted by YvonneMarieV on Aug. 15, 2014 at 12:35 AM

My kids started school last week so we are finished with our back to school shopping. I know that's not the case for everyone. There are still kids on summer vacation, which means there may still be some of you out there who still have some shopping to do.  I thought I would do something fun and  share some of my and my daughter's favorite items of clothing and perhaps inspire some ideas for your very own shopping adventure!

Let's Talk About Shopping For School Supplies

Posted by YvonneMarieV on Aug. 13, 2014 at 2:55 PM

My favorite part of back to school shopping is definitely the part where we go shopping for school supplies. There isn't a whole lot of drama or emotion when purchasing pencils and paper.  However, things can get a little nuts when the kids think that they need every! single! thing! that they see.

Back-to-School First Day Drop Off

Posted by TruthfulMommy on Aug. 13, 2014 at 11:20 AM

This morning was the first day of school for my girls. I won't lie and tell you that firsts get any easier for me. For the first time ever, I was excited about taking them back to school but as soon as I left my second grader in her new class and before I even left the school building, my heart was heavy with all the feelings; the missing, the growing up and the letting go. I freaking hate the letting go.

The girls are now 9 and 7, so we don't have to worry about the dreaded first day of preschool and kindergarten. Jeez, those days nearly broke my mommy heart in half. Again this morning, moms were dropping like flies in the kindergarten corridor; collapsing into pools of snot and tears just outside of the doorways. I kept a stiff upper lip and pushed their limp bodies aside as I took my girls to the more "dignified" end of the hallway to second grade. Not really, by second grade we've just learned to wear huge sunglasses and wait until we are safely back in the car before we have our breakdown.

Soaking Up The Last of Summer

Posted by AngellaD on Aug. 12, 2014 at 12:00 AM

Our school district is different than many others, in that our kids don't return to school until the beginning of September. They go to school until the end of June, so we have July and August to get our summer vibe on. While we got the jump start on buying back to school supplies, we put them in the office and are ignoring them while we soak up the last of our summer break.
