SHELBYVILLE, Ky. - A Kentucky urologist testifying in a civil trial against a doctor who amputated part of a man's penis said taking the time to consult with family about the surprising discovery of lethal penile cancer would have given it more time to spread.

Dr. William Monnig testified Wednesday in Shelby County Circuit Court in the third day of a trial in the lawsuit filed by 64-year-old Phillip Seaton and his wife.

Monnig was the final witness called for the defendant, Dr. John Patterson of Frankfort.

Monnig testified there was no reason for Patterson to have suspected penile cancer before the 2007 surgery, which was supposed to have been a circumcision to relieve inflammation. The doctor said infections are common, while penile cancer is rare.

Closing arguments in the case are expected later Wednesday.
