I WILL NOT tolerate porn.  It's just stupid, disgusting, laughable it's so un-real, etc., plus I feel it's against God (JMO), and I don't like anything with gory stuff with no plot, no nudity, and only tolerate so much violence, cursing, drugs, etc.  There are some shows that hubby watches and I'll watch sometimes that have drugs, drinking, cursing, etc. in them, but still have a great story going on.  I try to block out or ignore the bad parts, although sometimes it's hard.  It sickens me that the world has accepted such things on tv as just normal tv.

I completely agree. Porn is a no-no in my home.

I don't like horror movies. Foul language bothers me more than violence. And movies where bad things happen to kids, I don't watch those.

Oh this too. If I know a child is killed or abused in a movie, I can't watch it.

I think that's a really common attitude about the issue, but I don't see it.

I mean, I don't see that people are at all desensitized to it. In fact, I see a lot of evidence that people are totally overwhelmed by it. So overwhelmed, in fact, that they can no longer identify what it is that frightens them (why they routinely have panic attacks, nightmares or trouble falling asleep). So overwhelmed that they can no longer identify what it is that is angering them (why they routinely get stuck in arguments that go nowhere, with people they are not even mad at, about things they're pretty sure they don't actually care about)...

Obsessions, addictions, and anxiety-relieving coping skills (like nail biting and OCD and hair-pulling) all have a source, and I suspect it is all 'people are unable to protect themselves from being innundated by a chronic and constant flood of over-stimulation, ideas and images they can't deal with at all, shock and terror...'

I don't think it's that people don't see wrong, it's that they don't feel they have any choice, that they're pushed, provoked or even required to do what they 'have to'... as they so very often report what 'worse things' they were feeling compelled to do, that they didn't. It's not a matter of crime or no crime, it's this crime or that much worse crime...

I feel that part of the reason society is so screwed up is because we are desensitized to really graphic events, or serious issues. Nothing is 'shocking' anymore. I feel that is *part* of the reason murders, sex crimes, and violence are on the rise. Some people can see no wrong with the crimes any longer.

Quoting LindaClement:

Something Jim Henson said once really stuck with me:

If something is 'unsuitable for younger viewers' where is the evidence that it is suitable for older viewers?

Which got me thinking: where is there any evidence that adults can handle gory images, shocking news, horror or thriller ideas or disturbing scenes?

Quoting LindaClement:

Lots of things:

Broadcast news

Horror movies, thrillers, psychological thrillers and horror porn...

Tear jerkers

...

I noticed a long time ago the connection between what I let into my head and my view of the world.

I don't need more reasons to feel cynical and sarcastic about humans... I certainly don't need horrifying images in my head.

This is a big reason why I don't let my kids watch everything. I want to protect their innocence as long as I can.
