Would you want to stream your childbirth for online viewers to witness?
I'll say this much for 32-year-old Nancy Salgueiro: She's one brave lady! The Ottawa-based mother-of-two is expecting her third child soon via home birth, and she's planning to live stream the labor and delivery online. (Her first two kids were born at home, too, but not in front of millions of viewers.)
Having given birth a couple of times, I can say with absolute certainty that this is something I could never bring myself to do, but you know what? More power to her! I think it's awesome, especially because Salgueiro, a professional birth coach, is baring all in an effort to promote natural home births.
Believe it or not, this won't be the first time a woman has live streamed her birth online, but Salgueiro didn't know that when she came up with the idea. Also a chiropractor, she says she'll be sitting in a pool during her labor. Her husband Mike Carreira will be there to "drip water on her back." (Though he admits he's not sooooooooooooo into the whole Internet broadcast idea.)
"I'm just trying to support her in her passion," he says. "This is a stretch for me but I'm going to do it."
Awww, what a guy! Luckily, he won't be alone. Salgueiro will also have two midwives present, as well as someone to operate the HD camera that will be hooked up to her laptop.
So far 800 people have signed up to watch the birth on Salgueiro's website sometime around her due date, which is October 7. Viewers will be looking on from locations all over the world, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.
Like I said, I could never do what this brave mom is doing. But I'm considering tuning in.
