I'm sorry to hear about this diagnoses! I don't recall this topic in this group before but you might want to try the Newcomers group- only because there are sooo many more moms in that group. Someone might be able to suggest a more exact group to join for that type of support. Good Luck!

Yes, I had it at 18 months old. My left knee was as big around as my waist. I was hospitalized for months. They wanted to amputated my leg right above the knee but, my Dad wouldn't sign the papers. He flew in specialists and they agree that amputation could go high if not not done. He finally signed and the morning of the surgery they noticed a slight shift in the fluid and postponed the surgery. The fluid dissipated in my system and I still have my leg.

Each year without my knowledge they'd have my leg checked (along with other things) because they didn't want me coddled or use it as an excuse. I was very athletic and am now in my late 50's. There are no residual problems. When Dr.'s read it on my medical history they always ask, "Did you live in a third world country." No!

Ask me anything!!!

Did it affect your growth plate at all? My sons infection is from the base of the tibia into his ankle and has affected his growth plate. The infection he has seems to be clearing up well but our concern is that it will stunt the growth in his right leg.

No, not at all. I'm 5'8" with a 34" inseam. At that time I had deterioration on the marrow of the bone but, that did NOT continue after hospitalization. My sister got it also and my parents treated hers and she was 5'11". (She was born in a 3rd world country - Japan after WWII) Our middle sibling never got it and she is only 5'2". Height varies greatly in our family. Some were/are tall and some were/are short.

None of out child ever got it. I have 2 sons two years apart and 1 is 6'7 and the other is 5'7.5".

How is your child doing? I was told I awakened in the middle of the night screaming that my knee was hot. Mom said all she noticed was what looked like a small pimple on my knee but, my knee was very hot. They put cold compresses on it through the night, to no avail and brought me to the hospital in the morning.
