It's Coffee Break Time! Hot Topic: Can Justice Be Served In a Small Town?

Welcome to Mom to Mom's Tuesday Coffee Break!

The disturbing case of teenage boys in Steubenville, Ohio who have been accused
of raping a 16 year old girl last August is being played out on the national stage.
Accusations of a cover up are rampant because the boys are high school
football players. Football players, in a part of Ohio where football is King.

You can click here for more details.

1. Have you been following the news coverage of the Steubenville case?

2. Do you think the accusations of a cover up are valid?

3. Do you think justice can be served in Steubenville or should there be a change of venue?

I think the fact that there is video showing other boys in it and they refuse to press charges on them as well is terrible :(

I haven't followed the reports of this case in Ohio but when I did hear about it I thought they were talking about a recent case in my town in Missouri. The cases are disturbingly similar except in my town the rape happened in December and the boys dumped the girl on her front lawn in subzero temperatures. One of the boys took a video of the rape on his cell phone and the prosecutor declined to prosecute ANY of the boys, he said there wasn't enough evidence. All three were high school football players, one was a state senators grandson and another was the son of a bank vice president. Our school refused to let them back on the football team though. At the very least those boys should have been charged with possession of child pornography or statutory rape. At least 2 of them were 17, which is the age in Missouri at which you can be charged as an adult, move out of your parents house, etc. The victim was only 14. It's sickening...

I almost went to school at Steubenville University and visited there. So this case feels surreal to me.

Anyways, I've been following the case and I hope justice is served. As for number 2, yes I believe that since I've personally felt things were covered up before in a case I was involved in. (I was the victim). And yes, I think a change of venue will be best. I just hope justice is served.

My hs team played their team when I was in school and as far as I know still do (go TIGERS). they aren't as all about football like us and our rivals (boooo @ bulldogs). but they are still pretty football crazy. it's prpb a cover up.wouldn't suprize me at all. they cover up all kinds of stuff for football players. people around here also tend to 'protect their own' so as for change of venue depends if the judge is homegrown or not.

If these boys are guilty, they should be charged as adults to the fullest extent of the law.

Just a big cup of Columbian with cream please...

FOR ANYONE TO JOKE ABOUT RAPE NEEDS SERIOUS HELP!  Shame on them for allowing the people of Steubenville to think that the football team members could get away with anything.  That is sick.  The two boys were carrying an unconscience person (and I say person because you can't tell if it is a boy or a girl in the video lead) or man handleing a person.  I think cover up happens more than we know that it has.  I think that it is wrong and I think that is where a lot of innocent people are getting hurt.
