We started with just putting $10 out of each paycheck into savings.

Coupons and eliminated the unnecessary things.:

Bargain shop, use coupons, set money to the side and buy generic brands of certain things

I auto-transfer $200 per month to a different bank. I use that for birthdays/Chritmas & it really takes the stress off for those things. I treat it like a bill that must be paid.

I also auto transfer $100/month to household savings. Any $$ left at the end of the month also goes straight to either household savings, kid activity fund (which I use for field trips, etc.) or both.

Everytime we use our debit card a set amount is sent to savings (bank program).

Of course we also contribute to retirement & kids' college funds from our paychecks pre-tax.
