So my mom was over when I was cooking dinner a few weeks back. She saw me washing my rice and thought I was being weird stating "she never washed rice"

I didn't grow up washing rice. I never saw my friends families do it either, but when I moved to florida I started meeting people who did.

My son's god mother (who's cuban/puerto rican) and her family always washes the rice

My son's god father (who's puerto rican/japanese) and his family always washes the rice

My husband's mother (who's Nepalese) always washes the rice.

So which is it ladies, do you wash or do you think it's not needed?

Nope, water and sewage is expensive here so I don't use more than I have to.

I just asked dh and he says a friend does it before its cooked a few times to get the starch off. The friend is from new Orleans. We are from Indiana if that helps. Everyone is white.

When I make plain rice I always soak and rinse a few times to help rid it of some of the starch.  My Mom, Grandma and other family members always did, so I do too.  When I use Minute Rice, flavored rice, etc, I don't.

We don't eat rice but if we did, I would wash it. Soak. It has arsenic on it

Yes, I do now but I limit myself to no more than 3 washes.

Years ago I had no idea the benefits of rinsing rice so I didn't.  It wasn't until I met a middle eastern family that washed theirs that I started.  Now that my children are taking Japanese class I've met a lot of people who are very adamant about washing rice.  To me it taste better and you get some of the starch and dirt that can come with the rice off.
