My son has terrible acne and we can't get rid of it!

My son is 17 and has bad acne on his cheeks and forehead. He plays sports almost every day so that may contribute to it.  My older son (25) went on accutane and I really don't want to go the same route with him :( We've tried Proactiv (dryness and redness), Clearasil washes (red like a tomato), and salicylic acid (did'nt do much of anything, but he did say that it hurt on his face).

I would really like to try everything else before I take him to a dermatologist and have an antibiotic prescribed. Any suggestions?

UPDATE: So I took my son to the dermatologist and she wrote a prescription for tetracycline, but she also told us about a new product called the U-Wand. We held off on the tetracycline and ordered one from amazon. I HIGHLY recommend this thing! He has been using it twice a day for about two weeks and about 75% of his acne is completly gone. The product claims to be an "ultrasonic" treatment that gets below the skin. It came with the device (looks like a clarisonic with no brush), a cleanser, benzoyl peroxide gel, and a moisterizer. So far it has worked wonders and I'm really happy to see my son happier again! :) Just wanted to update everybody, thank you for all your replies!

I bought it here:

My dd is 10 with acne so I'd love to read the answers too. Nothing has worked for us either, we've tried what you have tried with similar results.

Why do you not want to go the acutane route again? It is a miracle drug for severe acne.

You are going to have to go to a dermatologist.  I took my son and we were told that for severe cases there are no over the counter remedies that work (proactiv is really bad).  Hopefully you have insurance because the medication that works costs a lot of money.  It worked for my son and after using it for a year he no longer uses it because his face is cleared up.  GOOD LUCK!

I would prefer not to go the accutane route because the potential short-term and long-term side affects. Two girls I work with took Accutane and they swear it caused their Krohns disease because nobody in thier faimily has it. My older son also experianced really bad depression when he was on it. Could be a coincidence but it just scares me too much.

I guess I will schedule a trip to the dermatologist and see what she says :/ I will update you!

Take him to a dermatologist right now.  It's obviously a problem worse than for most kids.  There are times when an antibiotic is called for and this might well be one of them.  Let the specialist have a look and your son will thank you for it.  Why don't you want to consider accutane?  Did it work for your other son?  It may be that your kids just need more help than other kids do.  Don't delay.

My son uses Cleocin-T. It's an antibiotic in liquid form. He rubs it on his face and shoulders, twice daily. It's worked miracles.

Stop with all of the OTC stuff!!!! It's probably making it much worse. Those things remove the oils from his skin which only forces the skin to produce MORE oil to compensate for what they strip-and more oil means more acne. By not going the dermatologist route  you are really making things worse for him with these things.

Maybe there is some other alternative the dermatologist will have for you.

I havve a 14 year old son and I swear by Mary Kay products.  He uses the Purifying Mask, the toner and the acne cream.  It has improved at least 75% in the month we've been using.
