New Dog

So we just adopted a dog from the humane society last week and he is not trained. He is good for the most part when we are home, we just have to make sure we keep on him all day and take him out. At night we keep him in the kennel because we can't trust him to be out on his own. We also put him in the kennel when we leave. We do not put him in there any other time, if we are home he is out. At night he doesn't pee or poop in the kennel. When we are gone, he does it every time. Any training tips?

The dog is a 10 pound Shih Tzu. He is just over a year old. He was in the shelter because the previous owner neglected him. He had to be shaved because his hair was all matted since the owner wouldn't brush him. He is a few pounds underweight. He doesn't know simple commands like sit or stay. We are working with him on that and he seems to be learning them quickly. He is a very good dog except that he isn't house trained.

Sounds like you're doing just fine. Keeping a routine is important as far as timing for feedings, letting out etc. He will learn the schedule pretty quickly. And positive reinforcement is KEY-always praise him when he does good and if you CATCH him having an accident, tell him NO and immediately put him outside to finish. Do not yell or hit him and especially if it's way after the accident because he will not even know what he is in trouble for. Good luck!

Our dog is just over a year and we still put him in his kennel when we leave because he is still a puppy at heart.  Kennels sound bad, but really are the best.  They keep the dog safe, comfortable, and out of trouble.  Just be consistent!

You are doing exactly what you are supposed to. The kennel is for sleeping only, they learn not to go in there. That's what it's for.

You're doin' it right! :-)
Shelter dogs are a bit iffy when you don't know their background, but it sounds like you are really following the steps to create a wonderful family pet!

it'll take time and patience.  Depends how old he is,  also it is typical if he comes from a shelter, unfortunately he's kinda used to go whenever he feels like it right there and then.

It's hard to give tips without knowing the breed or size. If you are inexpeirenced with dogs, I would suggest taking a training class or buying a book.

he may just be scared when he knows you are gone :( and feels alone. I would walk him right before you kennel to leave and hope that works otherwise he will probably grow out of it the more used to things he gets

Also make sure you take him out as soon as you get home and reward when he doesn't go like over night.. he will learn its his bed and to not pee there and that its a good behavior :) good luck,
