Homemade fabric softener piog

I'm in need of a very inexpensive fabric softener. I've heard of using vinegar, but what else works? I don't have a working dryer so wool balls or anything used in the dryer won't work.

I don't care too much about my regular clothes, but for my towels they get pretty stiff from hanging in the sun to dry.

TIA

I have tried the vinagar thing and it doesnt work for us. I have tried just about everything on the shelf. Im mainly all about smell. I am now using Downy Infusions softer. It works pretty good for my line dried towls. Its about $3 at our little walmart and goes a long way. No crunchy towls and they smell amazing. I hope someone can give you some more suggestions so you have more options to try. ;) I do make my own laundry detergent though

The crystals I use list salt and sugar in the ingredients .. You might try that along with the vinegar. Just throw the salt and sugar in at the beginning like you would with purex crystals.
