We decluttered my son's room (age 8) a few weeks ago. You have to stay on them about cleaning it every day. We ask him did you make your bed and clean your room. Right before bedime he cleans it up. We also have inspections. If its not clean we tell him what is wrong and he cleans it up. You have to do this every day to make it work tho. Otherwise, it will stay messed up. We haven't started our daughter's room yet (age 6) we need to clean it up.

My kids are 6 and 3 and they do pretty good at keeping their stuff picked up. I just tell them that this is our house (apartment, really) and it's the only one we have so we need to take care of it. It works...for now.

Make it a game.. Make it fun!! My dd was the same way she yells "I hate cleaning its boring and no fun." I turn the music on and make it a game, race against the clock.
