When we no longer get free plastic grocery bags, what will you do for liners and garbage?

When the small trash cans in my bedrooms and bathrooms fill up, I remove the trash in the plastic bag and line the cans with a fresh plastic grocery bag. When I have drippy icky garbage in the kitchen, it goes into a  plastic grocery bag and then into another plastic grocery bag where I put the day's trash from the kitchen. What will we do when the bags are discontinued - which seems to be going to happen and has happened some places already. I guess we wash and disinfect the trash cans frequently, but what about yucky meat trays, etc in the kitchen- I guess wrap them in newspaper? What do people do?

Interesting. I may ask next time I'm in. Or ask how they deal with people bringing reusables in.

Quoting Bmat:

I read a while back in one of the groups that some store- target, wmart, kmart, not sure which gives rebates if you bring your own bags, so you may want to check into this. I brought my own to Target about a month ago but got no rebate. I suppose we could call and ask before wondering.

Quoting MamaJane:

I don't know of you were referring to me but just on case lol.

I meant I have the reusable bags you buy from aldis and want to also use them at Walmart but I haven't done it. Because wm is set to bag for you and a was hesitant to be a pain. I love aldis and how it works. If wm was set like that then I'd do it in a heart beat

At Aldies you have to buy there grocery. Bags there 10cents each.

"As far as the small trash cans in the bedrooms, I made trash can liners out of 100% printed polyester fabric that is easily washed and dried.  I saw some for sale on esty and decided to make my own.  I compost and recycle everything else so the street can might be put out once a month, if that.  "

Great idea! Our bedroom  trashcans rarely have yucky stuff in them anyway. I have TONS  of fabric--not much polyester, though. I think I have some in pink--my boys would love that--NOT. LOL

I've seen people bring reusable bags to WM here. They hook them in front of the plastic bags (which when thinking about that, leaves me wondering what germs and such they left behind on MY plastic bags).

Quoting MamaJane:

I use reusables at Aldis and I have 6 of them (they are big). But I haven't ventured to do it at wm yet.  They are set up to bag for you.  Does anyone bring reusables to WM?  I buy a lot at once too because we are a big family.  Smetimes I will fill a cart.

Oh ok!  That makes sense, thanks!  I don't think the germs would be anymore then those on the plastic bags from the cashier's hands, her hands on your stuff after touching money, your own hands after touching various things in the store...just wash your hands when you get home and it's all good.

Oh! Well they sell them at Wal-Mart and dollar stores. I can't remember how many are on the roll or how much it is....that's how often I have to buy them.

Quoting Bmat:

I buy the big ones that line the big trash can that the garbage people pick up, but for lining the small cans in the bathrooms and bedrooms, and kitchen, I use the small plastic bags that the grocery stores put groceries in at checkout. I have seen kitchen can bags, but never bags small enough to use in a small trash can such as those in my bedroom and bathroom.

Apparently I am missing something here....I buy trash bags....

I try not to throw sticky things in the bags but if some things get stuck you have to reach in and pull them off manually or grab a piece of paper or envelope that is already inside of the trash can and wrap it in that.

Thank you for the tips.  There is a wealth of information in your post. I love the idea of reusing produce and bread bags. We can put newspaper and milk cartons in the recycling, so I do this.  A question I have about the liners you made for the small cans, what about if something gets stuck to the liner-  gum,  used bandaid, etc, you just pull it off with your hand?

I hate throwing away good hard earned money so, in my kitchen, my trash can sports a expensive Glad  force flex bag that I buy from a discount grocery store -  this is used for keeping spills off my can.  (Did I mention I hate cleaning out dirty trash cans too). Inside of the plastic  liner I use a regular large brown paper bag that I get from the grocery store. (By now I must have a 15 year supply of them).   When the trash can gets full I take the brown bag out to our larger street can and dump it in, reusing the brown bag over and over until it gets dirty.  I prevent the brown bag from getting too dirty by wrapping wet or oily or items in reclaimed produce bags, bread bags, newspaper or the square container milk comes in.

I change the brown bag maybe once every few  months or so and the expensive Glad bag only gets changed once a year, if that.   I  even clean the liner (if it's in good shape) with  a squirt of liquid soap and some water from the hose   -    let it air dry while still on the can    -   and it's ready for another year or more.  So lets see, at this rate I should have a 54 year supply since I have 54 left in the box.  So I guess you can say I have a life time supply.

As far as the small trash cans in the bedrooms, I made trash can liners out of 100% printed polyester fabric that is easily washed and dried.  I saw some for sale on esty and decided to make my own.  I compost and recycle everything else so the street can might be put out once a month, if that.
