I think it depends on the item. If it's a dairy or meat product I toss it because I don't want to risk getting sick. If it's something boxed that hasn't been opened yet, I would probably keep it as long as it hasn't been expired for years.

I'm with Becca.  I'm picky on dairy/meats.  If it's expired, it usually goes.  Too many bad experiences opening a container of expired cream cheese, sour cream, etc.

Boxed stuff, I'll let slide a couple of months, if it's not open.

I throw away dairy on the last day.  I don't keep for another week like most people say you can.  Boxed or cans I will use if they are a month or 2 out.  I don't keep meat longer than 3 months in the freezer.

I never keep it for another week either. Why risk it, you know.

This is what I do. Except I toss meats on expiration dates.

Some things I might keep an extra 3-4 days, as long as it passes the sniff test.  Sometimes the date means "sell by" or "best by", but that doesn't mean it neccessarily goes bad.  Sandwich meat gets marked for the day it was opened.  The date on the package is for unopened.  I only keep it a week after opened.

Expiration dates are helpful but I have lived by this motto for years...

When in doubt, throw it out.

Soooo...I have a carton of 4% (the full fat kind) cottage cheese in my frige, and it went "out of date" about 4 days ago.  It smells fine.  Tastes fine.  Ate some, didn't have a problem.

Thus, this is why it depends upon what it is.  Well, at least over here. embarrassed
