2 More Salad Recalls Sound Scary but Don’t Give Up on Salad

romaineLettuce have a moment of silence, for unto us is born not one, but two blessed salad recalls this weekend. Oh what joy is ours! As if the cantaloupe outbreak wasn't bad enough, our lettuce is dangerous, too.

First, there is the little one: An earlier cilantro recall due to salmonella contamination has led to 77,688 pounds of grilled chicken Caesar salad being recalled. And Romaine lettuce that has already traveled to 19 states is being recalled for possible E. coli contamination.

Honestly, someone needs to create an app just to help us keep track of all the recalls and outbreaks. But here's the details on these two recalls.

The chicken Caesar salads were distributed just in California, thank goodness. Be on the lookout for 36-ounce trays of "El Torito Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad Kit" with establishment number "P-4140" inside the USDA inspection mark (or the number "24203"). And look for sell-by dates 08/23/12, 08/30/12, 09/06/12, or 09/14/12.

Now for the bigger one. Check your plastic-wrapped romaine for the brand "Field Fresh Wrapped Single Head Romaine," UPC number 0-27918-20314-9. There may be a "best by" date of August 19. Over 2,000 cases may be affected.

The romaine was shipped to Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. It also traveled to Puerto Rico and Canada (not sure where exactly in Canada, though).

Are you totally singing that "50 States" song? I dread the day when we actually DO have a recall in all 50 states. I mean, we're almost halfway there. As per my usual, I'm buying my greens from my local CSA and the farmer's market. Because you still gotta get your greens.

Do you ever buy salad kits like the chicken Caesar one?
