Water Noodle Hockey

Two teams; Field; Water Noodles (used to float in pools - you can find them at a dollar store)- enough cut in half and able to give one half to every player. I use 8 in one color and 8 in another color for teams - making to 2 teams of 16, but any number will do; Whiffle ball

Use water noodle as "hockey stick". Same rules as hockey or soccer. The kids love this because using the water noodle takes the athleticism out of the game. Everyone is laughing as they try to hit the ball. For a greater challenge put 2 or 3 balls into play!

some noodle games activities guaranteed to get your kids moving!

NOODLE DUEL
Each student will need a partner for this activity. Each partner will have their own noodle piece and stand facing their partner touching their noodle pieces end to end. When the game begins, one partner will count to 3 then say “go”. Each partner will attempt to touch the other partner’s shoe first. When a shoe has been touched, the partners will get into start position again (end of noodle to end of noodle) and start another round. The game will continue until the teacher stops the activity.

NOODLE TUG
Students will need a partner for this activity. Each pair will have either a long noodle or a demi-noodle for the activity. Each partner will hold one end of the noodle and while keeping their feet side by side squat down over their feet. When one student gives the start signal, they will try to push or pull the noodle to make their partner loose their balance and move their feet, touch the floor, or release the noodle. When the round is over, the partner who lost will say “go” for the next round.

NOODLE SOUP
Split the class into 4 equal teams. The students may line up behind the cones facing the center of the game area. Two players will be picked to be the “crazy chefs”. The “crazy chefs” will attempt to protect their noodle soup (small noodle pieces) from the hungry students by hitting them with their spoons (longer noodle pieces). Each team will have two players at a time attempt to collect the food in the middle (they may only take one noodle piece at a time). The players who are attempting to collect food will be holding flags in their hands. If the “crazy chef” hits a hungry student, the student must go back to their team without some food and let another player go. After a few minutes, pick two new “crazy chefs” and continue the game. See how many pieces of soup each team can collect.

NOODLE TAG
This is the marquee tag game with a noodle piece. This one gets everyone up and moving and is a ton of fun. Just remember it is you against the world, you have no friends…..everyone is out to get you. Each student will get a demi-noodle and find an open space inside the playing area. When the game begins, the students will try to touch another student below the waist it their noodle. If a student is struck below the waist, they must leave the playing area and complete a fitness task (i.e. – 10 push-ups, 10 curl-ups, 10 jumping jacks, see the list of fitness activities listed later in the book). When the task is complete, they may re-enter the game and continue playing. If two students hit one another at the same time, they are both out.

LEANING TOWER OF NOODLES
All students will collect a demi-noodle then find a partner. The teacher will have the partners find an open space in the gym where they will stand one step apart. Each partner will place their noodles on the floor like a tower with their hand on top. When the activity begins, they will say “go” and let go of their noodle and attempt to catch their partner’s noodle before it falls to the ground. If successful, they will each take a step further apart and try it again. If they are unsuccessful, they may try again from the same distance. The game continues until the warm-up is over.

HORNET TAG
For this tag game, the instructor will choose 4 – 6 participants to be a “hornet”. Each “hornet” will have a stinger (a noodle piece). The “hornets” will attempt to tag others using their stinger. Once the “hornet” tags another person, they lose their stinger (just like a real hornet). The person tagged must leave the playing area and perform a fitness activity designated by the instructor. When the task is complete, they may re-enter the game. Once the stinger is dropped, any player not tagged may pick it up and then becomes the new “hornet”.

NOODLE CIRCULATION
Background: Students must have a basic understanding of how and why the body circulates blood through the body. Students will be able to provide the definitions for the following components of the cardiovascular system; veins, arteries, oxygen, carbon dioxide, lungs, and heart.
Activity: For this activity, the teacher will place a large number of red noodlettes in the center of the play area. The red noodlettes represent oxygenated blood cells that need to be pumped to a variety of body parts through the body. In several locations on the perimeter of playing area, the teacher will place a large number of blue noodlettes (these are the body parts (head, arms, legs, etc.). The blue noodlettes represent carbon dioxide that will be taken to the lungs to be expelled as waste. At either end of the playing area, the teacher will place note cards that have body parts labeled (head, cranium, skull, arm, radius, ulna, leg, tibia, fibula, etc.). Students will be paired for the activity and each partner will have either a red or blue demi-noodle. When the activity begins, the students will pick up a note card that will tell them which body part they will circulate the blood to and from. The person who has the blue noodle piece will start at the body part on the card and move a blue noodlette to the lungs in the center of the playing area. The partner with the red noodle will go to the center of the playing area and move a red noodlette from the heart to the body part that was on the note card. When the task is complete, the partners will meet, exchange noodle pieces and pick a new card. The partners will continue to complete the task of circulating blood (carbon dioxide filled (blue) or oxygen filled (red)) either toward the lungs (blue) or away from the heart (red). When all of the noodlettes have been moved, the students will reset the activity by bringing the all the red noodlettes back to the center of the playing area and place the blue noodlettes at the perimeter of the playing area.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME (created by Round Hill Elementary)

National Standards: Physical Education Standard 1 and 5
Equipment: 1 noodlette per student
Activity: The instructor will explain to the students that they are the birthday cake and their noodle is the birthday candle. The objective is to keep the candle (noodlette) on your head while moving away from the other birthday cakes (students). All the students are trying to wish themselves a Happy Birthday by blowing the candles off the other birthday cakes. If the noodlette falls off or is blown off by another student wishing themselves a Happy Birthday, then the student will pick up the noodlette, go over to the side and perform a fitness activity. Upon completion of the fitness activity, the student places the candle (noodlette) back on top of his/her birthday cake (head) and continues playing.
Teaching Tips:

  • Before playing this activity have the students practice walking around while balancing their noodlette on their head.
  • Allow the students to try different ways of balancing the noodlette on their head (noodlette standing up, noodlette laying down, noodlette facing sideways, or noodlette facing forward).
  • To add a challenge, students who can keep the candle (noodlette) balanced on their head for a designated amount of time (i.e. – 1 minute), they will add a second noodlette on top of the original noodlette so that the candle is now taller.
  • Remind students that they may NOT touch one another during this activity. The only way to get someone “out” is to blow the candle off of their head.

GUARD THE PUMPKIN PATCH (Halloween Activity)
Skills:
Dodging, Fleeing, Teamwork
Fitness Target: Aerobic Capacity, Speed, Agility
National Standards: Physical Education Standard 1 and 5
Equipment: 4 demi-noodles, large collection of orange, yellow, and green noodlettes, a large rope, cones, or hula hoops to mark the pumpkin patch
Background: It is getting close to Halloween and the pumpkins are getting ready to be picked. Unfortunately, the Halloween goblins are hungry and want to enjoy the delicious pumpkins and gourds from the pumpkin patch. The farmers must use their “pitchforks” (demi-noodles) to protect their crop from the hungry goblins.
Activity: The teacher will select 4 students to be the “farmers” (protectors). The farmers will each hold a demi-noodle. The rest of the class will be separated into small teams (about 4 goblins/students). Each team will be placed on the outside of the playing area and will have a hula hoop to mark their location. Two goblins (from each team) will attempt to collect one pumkin/gourd from the “pumpkin patch” (an area in the center of the space marked by cones). If a farmer touches a goblin on the legs while outside then “pumpkin patch”, the goblin’s turn is over. If the goblin can make it into the “pumpkin patch”, they are safe until they come out of “pumpkin patch” and try to make it back to their hoop. Again, if tagged on the way out of the “pumpkin patch”, the goblin is out and must return the pumpkin/gourd taken back into the “pumpkin patch”. Each team will try to collect the most pumpkins/gourds in the amount of time provided. After about 2-3 minutes, the teacher can pick new “farmers” and the game can continue. Teaching Tips:

  • Remind “farmers” that they may NOT go inside the “pumpkin patch” during the game.
  • Give each team two objects (i.e. – football flags) that can be held by the players who are in the game. This will better organize the turn taking in each group.
  • To make the game easier, only use two “farmers” instead of four.
  • To increase the aerobic capacity used in the game, move the teams of goblins further from the “pumpkin patch”.
  • Add different locomotor movements to the activity and/or allow students to collect more than one noodlette each turn to add some variety to the game.

THE GRINCH THAT STOLE CHRISTMAS
Activity: For this activity, students will be working in pairs. In the center of the space, all of the noodlettes will be spread out on the ground. This area is called, Santa’s Baking Workshop. Surrounding the workshop will be one hula hoop for each pair of students. Each student is an elf who along with their partner is trying to help Santa fill his final order for Candy Canes. Candy canes are very delicate and must be prepared a certain way so that they won’t fall apart when they are eaten. To complete the recipe to create a proper candy cane, each elf must work together to make it. When the teacher says “go”, the elves will start in their village (out side the playing area) and then run to the workshop and begin building a candy cane. To do this, they will each collect a different colored noodlette and stack them in their hoop. When the first two noodlettes are stacked, the elves will run back to their village (outside the playing area). This will give the candy canes time to dry properly. Once back in the village, the elves will now skip or gallop back to the workshop. The elves will then pick up another noodlette that keeps the candy cane pattern going. Again, when the third and fourth noodlettes are stacked, the elves will return to their village. When the return the last time, they will hop back to the workshop and finish make the candy cane by adding the last two noodlettes. Once the candy cane is completed (6 noodlettes stacked in alternate colors), the partners must work together to successfully carry their candy cane back to the village. To carry the candy cane, one partner must hold the bottom noodlette and the other partner will hold the top noodlette. They must squeeze the other noodlettes between the top and bottom and may not touch any other part of the candy cane. If the candy cane is dropped, they must go back to the hoop and rebuild it before carrying it to the village.
Teaching Tips:

  • Instead of putting the workshop in the center of the space, place it at one end of a playing area and put the elf village at the other end of the playing area.
  • Use different methods of travel than listed each time the students return back to the workshop.
  • Remind students that this is a teamwork activity. Each stage of the building process should be done together. Students should use appropriate communication and cooperation.
  • Use a poly spot to mark each team’s house in the village which is at the edge of the playing area.
