So we were invited to our nephews baptism. Thing is, we won't be able to get back to Wisconsin to go. So my question is, is it appropriate to send a gift in our absence or not really. I figured I could make him a little blanket and maybe a matching winter hat. Neither would take long to make. Thoughts?

I think it's completely appropriate, if that's what you wish to do.

I think that would be a very nice and thoughtful thing to do :)
