I use to. I use to go to every single event and volunteer in the classroom.

Then the CT shooting happened and our school went into overkill mood if you ask me. Now only people who are approved (with a weeks notice) are allowed in the school. Class parties are limited to 3 parents (the classroom parent, classroom photographer, and the party helper).

You are not even allowed to go into the school to drop off or pick up unless you go into the office, hand over your id, them check it against their records, and then you're only allowed 5 mins before they send someone after you to "escort" you out of the building (so you better pray you don't have to pee after going up those 45 steps to the upstairs classrooms!).

I just quit going. My son understands that I want to be there but due to the new security which is in place for their safety I can not be.

As far as family functions at school (not during school hours, etc) - we haven't heard if they're still going to be doing them or not.

especially since we are 4 states away!

I would be all for enforcing our current security bc what we had was up to par. We have limited access during school hours, routine drills/practices, etc. We're one of the smaller schools in our city so everyone "knows" everyone, etc.

I know things happened everywhere and that it could have happened at our school - all I'm saying is that as a parent of someone who's been at that school for 3 years now; I felt safe sending him there and now I feel like it's a child prison and hate the thought of having to go anywhere near the school (like to pick him up early for doctors appointments, etc). It's way to much of a hassle, the office systems doesn't have all the 'kinks' out of it yet, etc. In a perfect world, maybe it would be fine and go smoothly - however right now, it's just not worth the energy or fight.
