My 11-yr. old is going to Pikes Peek in Colorado for 2 weeks. It's his first trip without parents. I'm thinking about the YMCA for my 12-yr. old. My 9-yr. old will probably not go this year.

Real camp, sleeping away in cabins or tents, is a growing experience and fun for kids.  Trust me, the best part of summer whien i was growing up.  Of course both my parents worked and did not have the time, energy, money, or inclination to spend every other waking minute chauferring us around and entertaining kids. Both my kids participated in real camps too, with churches, 4-H and Boy Scouts.  They also participated in the little sports and day activities which are misnamed as "camps", but can provide good day care learning experiences and socialization for parents who work.
