Moms of children with special health needs, tell us how you manage:
1) teaching caregivers/educators
2) teaching your child to eventually be independent of your intervention.
If you care to share your child's special needs (allergies, medications, therapy, etc.) please do.
I don't really have a weigh in on this one, but it is a good topic. I have kids with special emotional needs, and my oldest has allergies, so I have to remind myself when he's visiting that I need to be careful about what I cook and serve! I think we are always trying to teach our children to be independent, it is just that some of them need to learn in different ways, or may have to have more modeling or scaffolding to be successful.
Allergies count IMHO.
We just hosted a large BBQ for family friends. My brother and family are vegans (though not "STRICT" anymore) so I have to make sure there are options for them.
But then two families came with children who had lots of food allergies. I tried to ID foods they COULD eat but had I known, I would have saved packaging for the parents to read to be sure things were safe for them. Or I would have labeled the foods so they'd know. I felt badly at first but then found I had enough healthy options for them to enjoy.
I found it interesting though - that only one child could speak up for himself about what he could/couldn't eat and the others let their mom do the talking for them.
