Maybe I am overreacting (updated in red)
I am taking a break from house work to do some Christmas idea browsing. I did the generic 5-7yr search on Amazon and found this "toy" list and well it really bothered me.
A
lot of the reviewers said they purchased them as props for high school
plays or Halloween. That maybe doesn't bother me. What bothers me is
that its listed as a toy in the 5-7 age group. These should not be listed anywhere near toys in my opinion.
I contacted Amazon along with at least one other mom. They responded to both of us letting us know they would look into this listing and correct it. I have not been back to see if they have though.
I do not think you should keep it out of sight and mind. Hopefully the parents don't smoke.It does raise the chances statistically that your kids will smoke. That is the BEST thing you can do. I'd avoid letting them habitually inhale second hand smoke. But you can not shield your kid from them. Some day when your not there they may try them. You will not be there to "shield" them. What you do is you talk to them. You educate them- toss in some scary health facts and some visuals if it's age appropriate. In the end they will do what ever they are going to do as young adults. It's our job to get them there~ adult hood and to raise them to be self assured, responsible, self-respecting, independent conscious decision makers.
I don't know about you but as a child I played with
Barbie= Not an anorexic model
Erector sets & Lincoln logs=Not an architect or brick layer
Marbles= Not a pool hustler
Baton= Not performing at half time or setting things on fire (flaming baton)
Had an easy bake oven= Not a chef.....No, wait I did become a licenced chef.....Hmmmmm...
If we make a big deal about it infront of the kids that is just going to sway most the in the direction (consciously or not) that we don't want them to go because it's cool to defy the parents at the time we start to cut the apron strings.
