Happy Valentine's Day, friends! Taking a break from the sleep talk to celebrate this love-ly holiday. I sent the kiddo off to school with those little Hello Kitty cards for each of her classmates. But that is it. Not sugary treats, no heart-shaped candies stamped with messages. The teachers, in their wisdom, asked specifically we don't send in treats. I can only imagine how hard it is to manage 21 five-year-olds on a sugar high.
But there will be treats on this day, right? Kiddo enjoys those gummy hearts, and I go ga-ga over caramel-filled chocolate hearts, but they definitely aren't great for our teeth. The hard candies, the sticky gunmmy yummies, all of those delicious little bits of heaven are number one culprits for cavities. Here are a few ideas for some sweetheart-worthy treats that are also a little better for the teeth.
-- Homemade Rice Krispy Treats. Pretty simple to make and actually you are sneaking in some vitamins there. Add some pink or red food coloring to make them extra Valentine-y.
-- Brownies. The basic goodness of these desserts is a little better for your teeth in terms of not sticking and not straight sugar that van eat away at enamel. Grab that heart-shaped cookie cutter for a special presentation.
-- Jell-O. Get a cool heart-shaped mold and fill it with yummy strawberry flavored Jell-O. Add a dollop of whipped cream and you have a wonderful dessert for your little Cupids.
-- Heart Tattoos. Forget something to eat - treat your little ones to some cool heart temporary tattoos. Remind them they last longer than a bite or two of chocolate!
What do you eat on Valentine's Day? Do your kids eat more candy today than most days?
We don't really eat anything special. My daughter is going to a party at my 11yr old brother school tomorrow since I have to work & my mom will be watching her, so I am sure she will have treats, but its no big deal :)
They'll be inundated with candy treats at school and will bring home bags full. It won't affect their teeth, however, since it's a one-time thing and not a daily occurrence, and they'll brush and floss before bedtime.
We eat normally on V-day. I made them pink and purple pancakes-so they did get more artifical coloring than normal but not much.
They don't get anymore candy today than they normally do. One piece and that's it.
Yes, they do get more candy today then most days- candy and sweets are a rare special occasion thing, I think that's ok to have a little something sweet in moderation.
As of yet we have never bought candy for our kids for Valentine's day. I don't think it's a necessity but when they're older I might get some for fun. Right now they aren't even in school so I'm not going to feel the "pressure" to give it to them.
My kids are so young they don't realize that most kids get candy for Valentine's day. I'm not going down that path for a long time!
