What is number one on your list of manners? Is it using that magic word please? Is it saying "thank you"? There are plenty of lists out there...I've complied one here for us, in no particular order!
1. Saying please when you would like something or need something.
2. Saying thank you when someone gives you something -- whether it is a snack or a gift or help.
3. Saying excuse me to get someone's attention.
4. When people ask you a question or are talking to you, look them in the eye and respond.
5. Don't call people mean names or tease others.
6. Ask permission if you aren't sure if you are allowed to do something.
7. If you burp or toot, say excuse me.
8. Use a napkin to wipe your face and use a fork or a spoon to eat your meals and snacks. Sit properly at the table and eat slowly.
9. Offer to help if you see someone is in need.
10. Keep your hands and your feet to yourself (aka no hitting or biting).
As our kids get older, we expand on these. Helping others extends to giving up your seat to an elderly person. Saying thank you becomes writing a thank you note after receiving a gift. Talking nicely and not teasing extends into texting and emails and Facebook statuses. But, perhaps, if we set the foundation now, with the basics, handling the next stages of manners and etiquette and behavior will hopefully be a bit easier.
What is on your top 10 manners list? What did I miss?
Sadly, I know A LOT of adults who could benefit from this list too.
They have to use a respectful tone when talking to other people, especially to adults, and as a Southerner, it's imperative that they also use "ma'am" and "sir" when talking to adults.
