Monday Mantra: Reading The Latest News on Healthy Kids
Some healthy habits never change...getting your kids to eat well, building their self-esteem, working on developing good routines, and basic stellar oral care all fall into those "always good habits" category. But, as you and I know, there is a world out there that is changing and evolving and, sometimes, news pops up that can help us tackle these habits or make us rethink how we can or give us new ideas and thoughts on teaching our kids healthy habits. This week, let's talk about what we are reading online, in the news, and in the papers about raising kids today.
First up, getting our kids to eat healthy. I ran across this cool tidbit the other day: First Lady Michelle Obama is teaming up with Epicurious.com and the departments of Education and Agriculture for "The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge." They are asking kids 8-12 years old and their parents to come up with a yummy, nutritious lunch recipe. It has to contain each of the food groups.
The deadline is June 17, and the winners will go to the White House and have a "state dinner" in August.
This would be a perfect way to get your kids into healthy food. Grab the cookbooks or look online for inspiration for your own unique healthy lunch creations. Make a few different ones, discuss all of the different components the lunch needs to have...such a fun project that can turn into a good habit.
What is your kid's favorite healthy lunch? Have you ever gotten them involved with cooking?
