Big deal or waste of time?

I'm assuming that you make your children do theirs but do you really feel it helps or do you do so out of principle because it's mandatory?

Right now, because he needs the practice, he is absolutely required to do homework.  My oldest just finished Kindergarten and he definitely needed to practice stuff, especially when he first started.  We still practice writing regularly because he's just not that great at it yet.

When I was in school, Homework was only 10% of my 6-weeks grade.  I sacrificed that 10% because I didn't have to do it.  I did well on everything else I had to do in class.  I understand why public schools require it, and I would make my kiddos do it until they hit their teenage years, especially High School.  So long as they are maintaining decently good grades, I'll be happy with that.  I know that's not the model mom attitude, and I want my kids to do great, but I'm also realistic and not doing homework is part of the rebellious stage that alot of teens go through.  I fully expect at least one kid to not want to, possibly all 3.  I'll be happy if they all graduate, honestly.  Out of 4 kids, my youngest brother and I were the only ones who actually graduated.  Even my husband only has a GED.

I'm sure it's good for them...but sometimes I wonder if it's too much.  You know, they're in school for like 6 hours a day and then more work?  Just saying.  We do ours (and partly out of principal)

As a teacher, I think homework is a great concept. Studies show that if a child completes 27 math problems on a certain concept, they achieve at least 80% mastery on it. When I teach I try to make sure the kids did at least 15 problems in class (so they could ask questions if they needed to), then I would assign 6 or 7 for homework, and then the next day they would do some more in class. Sadly though it seems like the kids who actually do homework (or who have parents who get them to do it) are the ones that don't need the help as much. If all of the kids would do it, homework would be great. But since you can't make kids do it, it doesn't help much.
