Would it be rude?

My 4yr old daughter is allergic to blue dye. So she can't have any food that is blue. (Green & purple things sold in stores, which have small traces of blue is ok, but just blue makes her break out. Frosting and things mixed at home to make purple or green would also make her break out). I've never had any problems being able to find food for her to eat or anything so it's never been a big deal until the other day. We went to this little girls birthday party and EVERYTHING there was to eat there had blue - blue spaghetti, rainbow cookies, blue frosted cupcakes, etc. So my little girl just couldn't eat anything. I obviously wasn't offended or anything, but it made me think more about the allergy. We are going to another birthday party tomorrow evening & I am debating rather or not it would be rude to call up the mom & ask about what color treats they are going to have. If the cupcakes & cookies are blue, I'll just bring some that aren't.

Do you think it'd be rude to do that? Should I just bring non-blue treats without checking first & keep them in my purse in case we do need them? I don't want to make that mom feel like she has to change everything if she already has it planned out.

Thanks for the advice ladies! :)

I don't think that it would be rude at all. I'm sure that if you explain the situation that she would not be offended at all.

I don't think it would be rude. Just call and ask and say that you do not want the mom to have to change things around, that you will bring a back up if there happens to be blue products.

I don't think it's rude at all. I'd feel horrible if a guest had an allergy to something I served.

I even went out of the way to find a peanut free cake for my daughter's birthday because my sister's son has a peanut allergy.

I don't think it's rude at all. I would probably also bring the backup treats just in case--I'm allergic to tree nuts and have been told at several restaurants that something only had peanuts in it, then had a reaction. So I would say better safe than sorry and just bring the backup snacks, etc, but that's just because I've gotten burned in the past, so to speak :)
