Hi, I'm Missy. I am a 40yr old mom of a 3yr old lil boy. I am also stepmom to 2 boys 11 and 18yrs of age. My 3yr old was diagnosed with Severe Apraxia of Speech and global apraxia, Sensory Processing Disorder, and is going to be evaluated for Autism Spectrum Disorder in a couple of weeks.
He is my life. I'm a stay at home mom and Thank God for that since he has Speech therapy and OT 3 times a week.
No one knows what causes Apraxia, or why some kids have it and others don't. My pregnancy was pretty normal. I carried him 2 days past my due date and had to have an emergency csection because he was stuck in the birth canal. Other than that everything was good.
It wasn't until he didn't babble at all when he was 18 months old that we really got worried. He didn't walk until then either. His pediatrician referred us to Early Intervention. We had Speech therapy, OT and "special instructions" in the birth to 3 yr program. Even then we didn't know anything about Apraxia. My mom seen a tv talk show one day and they were talking to a parent of a kid and they said Apraxia. My mom called me and I looked it up online. It was my son to a T. I read and read anything and everything I could on it. Talked to his SLP from Early Intervention about it. She said she couldn't diagnose him but she suspected it. I was put in contact with a therapy center that specializes in "special" disorders like Apraxia, Autism etc. He was evaluated 3 days after his 3rd birthday and we had a diagnosis. Severe Apraxia of Speech and some other smaller speech issues. We were then referred to an OT at the same center and he was diagnosed with Dyspraxia and Sensory Processing Disorder in the beginning of July. Since he was 3yrs old he also "graduated" to the 3-5yr program in Early Intervention and has Speech and OT with them too. He has 3 SLP's and 3 OT's.
I thought that was all that was "wrong" until a couple weeks ago we went to his pediatrician for a tummy virus and she talked to me and said she wanted him evaluated for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
So here we are, anyone have any questions feel free to ask. I would like to "meet" some ppl that have similar issues.
My name is Elayna. I have a 3 and 4 year old on the autism spectrum. We have speech issues here but as of yet, no official diagnosis of apraxia. We do have SPD here though and it makes things interesting.
I am so glad you found this group. The ladies in here are great and very supportive. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your family.
Welcome to the group I can't wait to get to know you and your family!
