My dd who just turned 2 on Sunday was diagnosed with pneumonia on Saturday. The last few days she has looked very gaunt and pale but is acting ok except for her nasty cough.

Anyways, it is obvious she has lost weight. She only eats pediasure and has gone from 4 cans a day to 2 but but she does not seem dehydrated. Plus we give her water via gbutton.

She was 19lbs 12oz at the hospital on Saturday. Yesterday she was weighing about 18lbs on our scale. Would that loss make such a difference in her appearence? The antibiotic has been making her sick to her stomach as well but that is to be expected.

Just wanted some input from other Moms who have had tiny ones get sick & lose weight. She has a well baby tomorrow.

I'm not sure. I know when Christopher was hospitalized for RSV, he looked very gaunt and pale. The ER doctor took one look at him and said get him on an IV and oxygen stat. He was dehydrated even though his numbers from the blood test didn't show it. I don't want to scare you or anything, but appearance is very important when little ones are sick. I think you should call the pediatrician and ask.

BTW, he was at the ER on Tuesday, doctor on Wednesday, and back at the ER and admitted on Thursday.

I would take her to the dr. just to be sure it's not more.

Thanks. We worked so hard for each pound. I hate watching them fall off. I am hoping we can get a pump to do some overnight feeds until she is better.

It is weird, its her legs and hip area that look so skinny. And she is ALWAYS been skinny but this is different.

I appreciate the input and experience shared!

I think it depends on where the weight fell off at. It's possible to lose a little weight but look thinner just because it came from your face or whatever. I'd take her to the dr just to be sure. Hope she feels better soon!

Is there an urgent care you can go to? Or maybe call the on call physcian at her pediatrician's office and see what they say. She's probably ok but better safe then sorry. Good luck!

I'm so sorry and she's so tiny! My 15 month old is only 15lbs. Also weighting on different scares makes a difference as well. You will never get the same weight on different scales and depends when it's calibrated (sp) as well. I would get the feeding pump to help her eat and try to do some boweless feeds perhaps that will work as well to make sure she gets the things that she needs.

My son is a big kid, but even he gets really pale and kind of gaunt looking when he's sick.
I'm sorry your baby isn't doing well! *hugs*
