This a question for all the parents who have a teenage child with a disabilites who going to highschool. I was talking to my daughter teacher and I ask her about highschool. Some highschool offer kids with disabilites and certificiate or diploma when they graduate . How did you feel when you talk to the teacher. I felt that I wanted to cry

Is it from the school or the Intermediate Unit?  Actually since he did not get anything the past school year since he was finishing 12 th grade I had a big 18th birthday party for him--lots of family and friends at the home and things he like to do--

I have already been thinking about this (my son is only 7) because apparently, in my state, there is some stipulation regarding what type of state assessment they take (either modified or alternate) and one precludes them from receiving a HS diploma. The truly crazy part is that they start this testing in 2nd grade and decide at that time which the child is capable of. My question is how the heck can you make a determination like that when a child is only in 2nd grade??? I was told not to worry "yet" because they are thinking of changing it. I sure hope so.

1 mom liked this

i can honestly tell that if your child is in a self contained special class - that they do only get a certificate of completion we have lived in several states due to hubby's job.. now also some parents do not know that the federal law is that the school distirct has to provide services through their 21 birthday-no til. that means if your child is 21 at the beginning of the year- they can stil go to school.

It's really sad, I know.

Do you think she could ever pass the GED? That is an option if you think she would want to go to college.
