Anyone ever have one? I'm having one this weekend, any tips for me?
We have them all the time! Put big ticket items out so people can see them. Advertise, the paper, craigslist, local fb groups. Put bright signs up with the address visible.
Have at least 20-30 dollars in change. Quarters, dollars and fives. Mark items a little higher then normal, like books instead of .50 ask $1, because you will probably be haggled.
Be ready to go 30 minutes prior to the time stated, there will be several early birds. Good luck!
I have never had a garage sale, but we set up at the local Antique Mall when they have their garage sale weekends. It's a great way to have a ton of people see and possibly buy some stuff. We usually do pretty well at those. We did one in May and we will do another one in Sept. I have no tips for an actual garage sale except to price to sell if you really want to get rid of things. There is nothing more annoying then an over priced garage sale, JMO.
Make sure you have some batteries on hand to demonstrate the toys (if you are selling toys). People will buy them if they know for sure the item works. But remember to take the batteries out.
Get change, post several signs w/ directions and keep some plastic grocery bags on hand for purchases. Price the item higher, people always talk you down! Then it also leaves room for negotiations. If you have something in pairs==Sell them in pairs. I made the mistake one time selling lamp, sold one for reduced price and an hour later the same lady came back to by the other and wanted the same reduced price.
After your yard sale is over take all unwanted stuff to donation place and GET A RECIEPT! That way you can use it to claim on your taxes as a charitable contribution.
Wish you lots of luck,,, they are sure alot of hard work. Also if you have kiddos get involved it helps keep them occupied. Lemonade stand, cookie stand or the actual cash box. Make a sign stating the cause you are having sale for "Trip to Disneyland or GREAT America" this sometimes helps so people contribute to your cause.
Good luck.![]()
Amanda had great tips-also be prepared for the weather--if it rains or not-- even if it says it does not-the last time I had one it was a muddy mess --that was 2 yrs ago-
Good luck !!
my oldest 13 yrs old just did a joint one with another girl so that they could earn money for their mackinac governors honor guard. They are goin up to the island to do flag and guide duty with girl scouts and needed spending money. They each earned 105 dollars which is totally awesome on my wallet :)
